A method for the preparation of a 2-hydroxymandelic acid of the formula (see Formula I) wherein R represents an alkyl radical containing from 7 to 12 carbon atoms which comprises reacting glyoxylic acid with a phenol of the formula: (see Formula II) under acid conditions. Oxidation of the 2-hydroxymandelic acid to the corresponding 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is also described.
