Abstract of the Disclosure: 4-Acetoxystyrene of the formula I Image (I) is prepared by a process in which a 1-(4-acetoxyphenyl)- ethyl carboxylate of the Formula II Image (II) where R is C1-C10 alkyl, C3-C6-cycloalkyl, aryl or C7-C10- aralkyl, is converted in the presence of an acidic catalyst and of a polymerization inhibitor in an inert heat transfer medium at from 160 to 250°C and from 0.1 to 300 mbar.
