ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is concerned with a process for the preparation of a 5-hydroxymethylimidazole of the formula 1 Image 1 where R1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, phenyl, benzyl or .beta.-phenylethyl, and R2 is alkyl of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or phenyl, wherein an imdazole of the formula 2 Image 2 where R1 and R2 have the meanings given for formula 1, is reacted with formaldehyde or an oligomer of formaldehyde is aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, containing from 5 to 18% by weight of hydrogen chloride, at from 80° to 160°C, if appropriate in a closed system under pressure, the resulting 5hydroxymethylimida- zole is isolated in the form of its hydrochloride and the ratio of imidazole to hydrogen chloride being from 1:1.5 to 1:5. The process according to the present invention is particularly usa- ble to prepare 5-hydroxymethylimidazoles in a very simple manner, and in a form free from by-products, on an industrial scale.
