ABRIDGEMENT 5-Substituted indane-2-carboxylic acids and functional derivatives thereof having inflamation-reducing properties have the general formula Image in which R is a phenyl, halophenyl, polyhalophenyl, lower alkylphenyl, phenyl-lower alkenyl, lower alkoxyphenyl, nitro- phenyl, aminophenyl, dialkylaminophenyl, acetamidophenyl, biphenyl, furyl, thienyl, halothienyl, lower alkyl thienyl, pyridyl or cyclohexyl group and R' is a hydroxyl, lower alkoxy, lower dialkylaminoalkoxy, cinnamoylamido lower alkoxy, 2-hydro- xyethylamino or amino group. The functional derivatives include the pharmacologically acceptable salts of the above compounds. The compounds are also of low toxicity, have analgesic activity and exert an antipyretic effect.
