A B S T B A C T A process for the preparation of a cyclopropanecarbaldehyde of the general formula Image (I) wherein R represents an alkyl, alkanoyl, hydroxy, acetoxymethyl, hydroxymethyl or carboxyl group, or a halogen atom which comprises reacting a 4-substituted-2-carene of the general formula Image (II) wherein R has the meaning given above, with a mixture of ozone and oxygen in the presence of an anti-oxidant and subjecting the resulting ozonide to reductive cleavage by the action of a reducing agent to yield the cyclopropylanecarbaldehyde.
