ABSTRACT A polymorph off .beta.''-A12O3 which has a high conducti- vity for protons (H+) in the form of hydronium ions (H3O+) is achicvable with the compound known as H3O+- .beta.''A12O3 via the direct production of a dense K+- .beta.''-A12O3 material with a high percentage (80% or more by weight) of the .beta.''-alumina phase. That phase is ion exchangeable with the hydronium ion. method of producing such potassium .beta.'' alumina powder is dis- closed utilizing as constituent feed components compounds of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and aluminum, freezing them then freezing-drying them and calcinating them. The resultant is K+- .beta.''-Al2O3 in an ultra-fine white powder form.
