ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aqueous solution is disclosed which is useful for preventing rot and mildew from forming on silage or seeds. The solution comprises an ammonium, alkali metal or magnesium salt of an alkanoic acid which is prepared by adding liquid anhydrous ammonia, an alkali metal hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide to an agitated aqueous mixture of water and the alkanoic acid in a cooled reactor. When the salt is ammonium salt, the mole ratio of the salt to the alkanoic acid is 1:0.5 to 1:0.2 and the mole ratio of the salt to water is from 1:3.8 to 1:5.8.
