ABSTRACT A process for the preparation of a cyclohexanone of formula I Image wherein R is an alkyl group is disclosed. The process comprises subjecting a phenol of corresponding formula II Image II to selective vapour phase hydrogenation at 100°C to 350°C in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium supported on a carrier comprising an aluminium spinel.
