A B S T R A C T Hydrogenation of a mixture prepared from a 6-deoxy-6-demethyl-6- methylenetetracycline compound, and a catalytic amount of a dicarboxy- lato(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(II)or dicarboxylato(substituted tiphenylphosphine)-rhodium(II) compound, in a reaction-inert solvent, produces the corresponding 6-deoxytetracycline compound. The hydrogenation takes place with a stereo-selectivity which favors the 6.alpha.-isomer over the 6.beta.-isomer. The products are known antibacterial agents.
