A process for making an amphetamine from a phenylpropanolamine salt, the process comprising: (a) acylating the phenylpropanolamine salt with an acylating agent in a solvent at elevated temperature to make a reaction mixture containing an O-acylated phenylpropanolamine salt which can be isolated by the addition of a crystallization solvent, or optionally this mixture can be used in the next step; and (b) hydrogenating the O-acylated phenylpropanolamine salt to make the amphetamine in thepresence of a catalyst.

L'invention concerne une méthode de préparation d'une amphétamine à partir d'un sel de phénylpropanolamine. Ladite méthode consiste (a) à acyler le sel de phénylpropanolamine à l'aide d'un agent d'acylation dans un solvant à température élevée afin d'obtenir un mélange de réaction contenant un sel de phénylpropanolamine <I>O</I>-acylé pouvant être isolé par l'ajout d'un solvant de cristallisation, ledit mélange pouvant éventuellement être utilisé dans l'étape suivante; et (b) à hydrogéner le sel de phénylpropanolamine <I>O</I>-acylé afin d'obtenir l'amphétamine en présence d'un catalyseur.
