ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for preparing an aniline, comprising reacting a phenol with an amination agent in the presence of a .gamma.-alumina catalyst having a mean pore diameter in the range of from 30 to 90 angstroms with a standard deviation of 10 to 40 angstroms based on statistical calculation from pore diameter and pore volume. The process permits preparing an aniline at high conversion and high selectivity.
