ABSTRACT An improved method is disclosed for preparing active anodes for use in electrochemical processes such as water electrolysis. The anodes are cleaned and pre-treated prior to being given a galvanic nickel coating. They are then activated in a galvanic bath containing 10 to 300 g/l of nickel sulphate-hydrate and thiosulphate in an amount corresponding to 10 to 200 g/l of sodium thiosulphate. The pH of the bath is maintained at 4.5 to 6 and the temperature at 30 to 50°C. activation being carried out by the application of an anodic current density of 0.2 to 1 A/dm2 for 3 to 5 hours. The resulting activated anode exhibits a low overvoltage and remains active for a longer period.
