ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Aromatic bisimides can be prepared by effecting reaction between a 3- or 4-nitro-N-substituted phthalimide with an aromatic dihydroxy compound in the presence of a solid alkali-metal hydroxide and using a certain class of dipolar aprotic compounds, e.g., dimethyl formamide, as a solvent. In particular, a process is disclosed for making aromatic bisimides of the general formula Image which process comprises effecting reaction in the presence of a solid alkali-metal hydroxide between a nitro-N-subsituted phthalimide of the general formula Image with an aromatic dihydroxy compound of the general formula HO - R - OH where R is a member selected from the class consisting of (a) divalent radicals of the formula Image , Image , Image , Image , - continued - Abstract - continued: Image , Image , and Image and (b) divalent organic radicals of the general formula Image where X is a member selected from the class consisting of divalent radicals of the formulas -CyH2y , Image , Image , Image , -O- , and -S- , where m is 0 or 1, y is a whole number from 1 to 5, and R' is the phenyl radical or an alkyl radical of from 1 to 2 carbon atoms, the said reaction being conducted in a dipolar aprotic solvent selected from the class consisting of N,N-dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl formamide (DMF), N-methyl pyrrolidone, and mixtures of such solvents.
