ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An aromatic polymer is prepared by polymerizing a dialkali metal salt of a diphenol with a dihalodiphenyl compound having an electron withdrawing group in at least one of the positions ortho or para to each of the halogen atoms, at a temperature in the range 200°C to 400°C in the presence of from 0.1 to 30% by weight of an inert nonpolar aromatic reaction lubricant.
