ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Aromatic urethanes are prepared by reacting aromatic amines with hydroxy compounds, carbon monoxide and oxygen or nitro compounds at elevated temperatures and superatmospheric pressure, using special selenium or sulfur catalysts. The aromatic urethanes obtainable by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the preparation of dyes, crop protection agents, drugs and polyurethanes.
