ABSTRACT Carbon microballoons are prepared by atomizing a pitch in admixture with a low-boiling organic solvent as a foaming agent into particles having a size in the range from 4,760 µm to 32 µm, flash heating the atomized pitch at a temperature higher than the boiling point of the low-boiling organic solvent to cause foaming, thereby forming pitch microballoons, treating the pitch microballoons with an oxidizing gas or liquid to make them infusible, and sintering the infusible microballoons in a non-oxidizing atmosphere for carbonization.
