Copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate which dissolve in water to give a clear solution are prepared by free radical solution polymerization by a process in which a mixture of the monomers which contains not more than 15 % by weight of the total amount of N-vinylpyrrolidone is first copolymerized, the polymer- ization is continued with the addition of the remaining amount of N-vinylpyrrolidone, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of an azo initiator, and a postpolymerization is then carried out in the presence of a peroxide free radical initiator.
