Abstract of the Disclosure: A process for the preparation of curable etherified aminoplast resins based on urea/ aldehyde polycondensates, and the preparation of surface coating resins. Urea is first reacted with an .alpha.,.alpha.-dialkylaldehyde, as much as 50 mol% of which may be replaced by formalde- hyde, in a molar ratio urea/aldehyde of about 1-2, at from 50 to 120°C, in the presence of an acid and in the pre- sence or absence of an alcohol or of other organic sol- vents, and the 2-oxohexahydropyrimidine derivative obtained in this cyclocondensation is then condensed with formal- dehyde in the presence of one or more alcohols and an acid. These aminoplast resins are useful as both acid- curable resins and as resins for baking finishes.
