Abstract of the Disclosure The invention provides compounds of the formula I Image I wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently an alkyl or alkenyl group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms or R1 and R2 together represent -(CH2)p-, where p is an integer from 2 to 6; and R is a tertiary alkyl group containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. The invention also provides a novel process for preparing such compounds which comprises reacting a tertiary alkyl 2,2-di- halopropanecarboxylate with (i) a lower alkylmagnesium halide or a di(lower alkyl) magnesium or both a lower alkylmagnesium halide and a di(lower alkyl) magnesium, or (ii) a polymethylene-bis(magnesium halide) containing p methy lene groups per molecule, and adding a proton donor to the reaction mixture so obtained.
