A B S T R A C T The preparation of gamma-pyrones, by a process which comprises reacting a furfuryl alcohol with at least two equivalents of a halogen-containing oxidant, selected from chlorine, bromine, bromine chloride, hypochlorous acid, hypobromous acid or a mixture thereof, and heating the resulting 4-halo-dihydro-pyran intermediate until hydrolysis is substantially complete.
