Described is a method of producing reactive halogen-free polyisobutene having more than 50 mole % of terminal double bonds and a mean molecular weight Mn of 500 to 5000 Daltons by the cationic polymerization of isobutene or isobutene- containing hydrocarbon mixtures in the liquid phase, the polymerization being carried out at a temperature of -30 to +40 ~C over a heterogeneous polymerization catalyst which includes at least one element which acts as promoter selected from the Ist, IInd, IIIrd, IVth, Vth, VIIth or VIIIth sub- group of the periodic table of the elements or from the IInd, IIIrd, IVth, Vth or VIth main group of the periodic table, or several such elements, each in the form of an oxygen-containing compound, plus zirconium in the form of an oxygen-containing compound, the catalyst not containing technically significant amounts of halogens.

Ce procédé permet de préparer du polyisobutène réactif exempt d'halogènes contenant plus de 50 % en moles de liaisons doubles terminales et d'un poids moléculaire moyen M¿n? compris entre 500 et 5000 daltons, par polymérisation cationique d'isobutène ou de mélanges d'hydrocarbures contenant de l'isobutène en phase liquide. La polymérisation est conduite à une température comprise entre -30 ·C et +40 ·C sur un catalyseur hétérogène de polymérisation qui contient au moins un élément promoteur sélectionné dans les groupes secondaires I, II, III, IV, V, VII ou VIII de la classification périodique des éléments ou dans les groupes principaux II, III, IV, V ou VI de la classification périodique des éléments, ou plusieurs de ces éléments, sous forme d'un composé oxygéné associé à un composé oxygéné de zirconium, le catalyseur ne contenant pas de proportions techniquement actives d'halogènes.
