ABSTRACT The present invention provides a process for produc- ing a hydrocarbyloxymagnesium halide of the formula ROMgX, wherein RO is a hydrocarbyloxy group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and X is a halide, characterized by reacting magnesium metal with an oxygen containing compound containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms and an anhyd- rous hydrogen halide under anhydrous conditions, in an inert atmosphere and in a hydrocarbon reaction medium. The hydrocarbyloxymagnesium halide thus produced is useful for the preparation of catalyst supports which are themselves useful in the manufacture of Zeigler-Natta type catalysts.
