ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process for preparing indole derivatives of the formula. Image (I) wherein R1 and R2 each are hydrogen. halogen, C1-C3 alkyl, C1-C3 alkoxy, nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl, or when taken together, form methylenedioxy; R3 is hydrogen, halogen, C1-C3 alkyl, C1-C3 alkoxy, nitro, cyano or dimethylamino; and R4 is hydrogen or halogen, which comprises cyclixin a compound of the formula, Image (III) wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are as defined above, with an acidic condensing agent. The indole derivatives of the formula (I) men- tioned above are useful an a key intermediate for the preparation of benzodiazepine, which are useful as tranquilizers, muscle relaxants and the like.
