ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing linear alpha olefins and waxes having a total product Mn in the range 200 to 700 which includes polymerizing an ethylene-contain- ing gas in the presence of the reaction product of a zirconium halide with R2Zn, wherein R is an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of a diluent at a temperature of 50 to 200°C and an ethylene pressure above 3.5 MPa, wherein the Mn of said reaction product is controlled by the molar ratio of said R2Zn/ZnC14, said molar ratio being less than 1.
