A refiner mechanical pulp is produced employing a two stage refining operations with an interstage chemical treatment. Energy savings are achieved to substantiate the same overall pulp quality by employing a reduced application of energy in the first stage of refining having a maximum of about 0.75 MWh/odt of pulp.
