ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the manufacture of methyl mercaptan with substantial reduction of by-product methane by intimate mixture of carbon oxide, sulfur or hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen at elevated temperature and pressure with a single-phase, solid catalyst system comprising a porous alumina-containing support upon which is deposited a mixture of manganese sulfide and alkali metal sulfide.
