Group 1 or 2 metal salts of N-cyanodithioiminocarbonate are prepared by reacting-cyanamide carbon disulfide and a Group 1 or 2 metal hydroxide, preferably in a methanolic solvent. These salts can be converted to metal salts of S-substituted N-cyanodithioiminocarbonates, which react with hydrazine or its hydrate to yield the metal salt of 3-mercapto-5-amino-1H-1,2,4 triazole. Sodium S-methyl N- cyanodithioiminocarbonate is a novel compound.
