A process for the preparation of N-substituted pyrrolidones by the cat- alytic hydrogenation of maleic anhydride, maleic acid and/or fumaric acid in the presence of a primary amine and a solvent, at elevated temperature and pressure, wherein a catalyst is used which contains cobalt and at least one of the elements manganese, copper, phosphorus, molybdenum and/or sodium.
