A novel process for preparing narcotic analgesics such as hydrocodone and hydromorphone using catalytic amounts of homogeneous organometallic complexes is disclosed. Compounds produced according to the process have formula (I) Image wherein R1 is hydrogen, methyl or a protecting group for protecting phenols or alcohols; R2 is hydrogen, methyl, allyl, cyclobutylmethyl, benzyl, trialkylsilyl or an amine protecting group; R3 is hydrogen, hydroxyl or an amino group.

On décrit un nouveau procédé de préparation d'analgésiques narcotiques, tels que l'hydrocodone et l'hydromorphone, dans lequel on utilise des quantités catalytiques de complexes organométalliques homogènes.
