3-Pentenoic acid or the R ester of pentenoic acid is produced by treating pentenoyl chloride in a reactive distillation zone with ROH where R is hydrogen or hydrocarbon of 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Butadiene may be reacted with HCl that is formed by the hydrolysis of pentenoyl chloride, and the butadiene converted to chlorobutene, and the chlorobutene reacted with carbon monoxide to form pentenoyl chloride.

Acide 3-penténoïque ou ester R d'acide penténoïque obtenus en traitant le chlorure de penténoyle dans une zone de distillation réactive avec ROH, où R est de l'hydrogène ou un hydrocarbure de 1 à 6 atomes de carbone. On peut faire réagir le butadiène avec le HCl qui se forme lors de l'hydrolyse du chlorure de penténoyle, puis convertir le butadiène en chlorobutène, et enfin faire réagir ce dernier avec le monoxyde de carbone pour former le chlorure de penténoyle.
