2116959 9305016 PCTABS00020 Dilute solutions of chlorinaceous compounds have been employed as disinfectants, but it is desirable to find alternatives to them in view of their possible implication in the formation of carcinogenic or otherwise harmful substances. Dilute solutions of hydroxyaliphatic peroxyacids are made by first reacting a satured or near satured solution of the precursor hydroxyaliphatic carboxylic acid with concentrated hydrogen peroxide, preferably employing a mineral acid catalyst, until the concentration of peracid available oxygen (Avox) has attained or nearly attained a maximum and then diluting with water, preferably containing additional hydrogen peroxide and a stabiliser for peroxygen species. By adopting this method, a higher concentration of the more active peroxyacid species can be maintained in the dilute solution without increasing the amounts of hydroxyaliphatic acid and hydrogen peroxide employed. The solutions are available for disinfection, and the other uses of peracids, such as for bleaching.
