ABSTRACT An improved process for preparing phthalaldehydic acid which comprises hydrolysing pentachloroxylene of the formula Image by heating a mixture of pentachloroxylene and phthalaldehydic acid in water at 80 - 180°C. Phythalaldehydic acid is used in light-sensitive compositions and for preparing 1(2H)-phthalazinone.
