ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Pentachloropyridine and polychloro deriva- tives of 2-(trichloromethyl)pyridine are prepared by reacting 2,4-dichloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine in the liquid state with chlorine at temperatures of from about 160°C in the presence of a Lewis acid type cata- lyst. The products are useful as herbicides, pesti- cides, or as chemical intermediates for the prepara- tion of other products useful, for example, as herbi- cides or pesticides.
