Preparation of polymers by cationic polymerisation A B S T R A C T The preparation of polymers containing halogen end groups from cationically polymerisable monomers by means of a catalyst system of a metal halide and an organic halide, the metal halide being present in a quantity of from 10-1 to 10-6 mol per mol of monomer and the metal halide being used in a 2 - 100 times molar excess compared with the organic halide, at a temperature of 10°C to -130°C in the presence of a solvent which is inert under the reaction conditions yields polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution and high degree of functionality if from 10-1 1 to 10-4 mol of water is present per mol of metal halide.
