PREPARATION OF POLYORGANOSILOXANES WITH CONTROLLED LOW-LEVELS OF HYDROXY SUBSTITUTION ABSTRACT The described process uses aqueous hydrogen chloride as a catalyst to effect the condensation of chloride and hydroxy end-substituted polyorganosiloxanes, in the presence of triorganosilyl endblocker to control chain length. The inventors have discovered that within a range of about 10 to 30 percent aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride, it is possible to produce polyorganosiloxanes with low levels of chloride and hydroxy substitution. Furthermore, it has been found that within this hydrogen chloride range, temperature and hydrogen chloride concentration can be controlled to produce polyorganosiloxane polymers with a reproducible and predictable level of hydroxy substitution.

Le procédé décrit utilise du chlorure d'hydrogène aqueux comme catalyseur pour effectuer la condensation de chlorure et de dérivés de substitution de polyorganosiloxanes avec hydroxyle terminal, en présence d'un bloqueur terminal triorganosilylé permettant de contrôler la longueur de la chaîne. Les inventeurs ont découvert que, dans une plage d'environ 10 à 30 pour cent de solution aqueuse de chlorure d'hydrogène, il est possible de produire des polyorganosiloxanes avec de faibles teneurs de substitution en chlorure et en hydroxyle. De plus, on a constaté que dans cette plage de chlorure d'hydrogène, la température et la concentration de chlorure d'hydrogène peuvent être ajustées pour l'obtention de polymères de polyorganosiloxane avec un taux reproductible et prévisible de substitution hydroxy.
