In a process for preparing prepolymers containing isocyanate groups by reacting organic isocyanates (a) with H-acid compounds (b), the reaction to give the prepolymer is carried out directly in the process stream of the isocyanate-producing plant. Also provided are the prepolymers containing isocyanate groups prepared is this way, their use for preparing PUR and also a process for preparing PUR by reacting at least one prepolymer containing isocyanate groups, if desired in admixture with further organic and/or modified organic isocyanates (a), with compounds containing at least two reactive hydrogen atoms (b) in the presence of, if desired, blowing agents (c), catalysts (d) and, if desired, further auxiliaries and/or additives (e).
