ABSTRACT Process for the preparation of alkali metal diaryl phosphides, characterized in that alkali metal diaryl phosphides of the formula (R9)2PM are prepared by reacting, in liquid ammonia, an alkali metal M with a triaryl phosphine of the formula (R9)3P, in which formulae R9 represents an aryl group containing one or more polar substituents which can occupy no other positions in respect to the phosphorus atom than the two meta positions and one of the ortho positions. The alkali metal diaryl phos- phides are useful as starting materials for the preparation of tetraaryl diphosphines of the general formula (R9)2P-R-P(R9)2 useful as components of catalyst compositions applied in the preparation of polymers of carbon monoxide with olefinically unsaturated compounds.
