A B S T R A C T A process for preparing a salt of a secondary monoalkyl sulphuric acid comprising sulphating, in a sulphation reaction zone, one or more C8 to C22 olefins with sulphuric acid in the presence of at least 15 %mole, on olefin, of one or more added secondary C8 to C22 alcohols, neutralizing the secondary mono- alkyl sulphuric acid so formed to prepare the salt thereof, recovering one or more secondary C8 to C22 alcohols from the neutralization reaction product and recycling the recovered alcohol to the sulphation reaction zone.
