ABSTRACT This invention concerns an improved process for production of tetrachloropyridine which comprises heating a mixture of pentachloropyridine, zinc, and HCl in an aqueous medium at a temperature of at least 110°C under at least autogenous pressure wherein the mole ratio of zinc:pentachloropyridine is in the range of from 1.0 to 2.0, the mole ratio of HCl:zinc is in the range of from 0.75 to 2.0, and the weight ratio of water:pentachloro- pyridine is in the range of from 0.4 to 3Ø The process gives high conversions of pentachloropyridine and high yields of tetrachloropyridine.
