Methods of preparing industrial wastes, such as mine tailings, for storage and management facilities therefor are disclosed. Processed mine tailings are made into a pumpable, stable slurry which can be subaerially or subaqueously deposited as a mass. A tailings management facility for receiving and storing the waste would utilize a depression or the like in the ground, such as a mined-out pit, having a bottom elevation well below the groundwater table. Tailings are initially deposited subaerially in the central portion of the pit followed by subaqueous deposition and eventual subaqueously covered prior to decommissioning.
