ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process is provided for the preparation of white liquor for the sulphate pulping process, wherein quicklime is slaked with green liquor and the slaked lime formed is reacted with the sodium car- bonate in the green liquor to produce sodium hydroxide in a causticizing process, the lime sludge so formed when being separated. According to this invention, water included in green liquor is reacted with calcium oxide and then calcium hydroxide so-formed is reacted with sodium carbonate in the green liquor to obtain sodium hydroxide and calcium car- bonate, each of the above reactions being carried out at a pressure above at- mospheric pressure. In a preferred embodiment, the process is also car- ried out at a temperature above the normal boiling temperature of liquids in the system e.g. at a temperature of 105-170C. In this way a number of advantages are obtained. Since the reaction takes place in a closed vessel the exothermic heat of reaction raises the temperature above 105C. At this higher temperature, lime sludge precipitates as larger crystals, which are easier to separate from the white liquor.
