Abstract of the Invention A process for the preparation of aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids by reacting alkali metal salts of phenol with carbon dioxide in organic phosphine oxides containing straight or branched alkyl groups having from 1 to B carbon atoms or phenyl groups. By this process, p-hydroxybenzoic can be obtained in a high yield. The product is useful as an antiseptic and also as an inter- mediate of a variety of agricultural, pharmaceutical or polymer chemicals.
