ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A preparation is provided herein which may be used for diagnostic purposes in relation to chlamydial infections. The preparation comprises a lipopolysaccharide isolated from the Re-mutants of Gram negative bacteria, which are strains cross-reacting with group antigens of chlamydial origin. Advantageously such Gram negative bacteria are Salmonella minnesota M R595, deposit No. RHE 320, Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland, Salmonella typhimurium Re deposit No. SL 1102, Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland, Escherichia coli D 21 f 2, deposit No. EH 237, Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland, or Proteus mirabilis R 45, deposit No. EH 193, Public Health Institute, Helsinki, Finland. The preparation can be used for the demonstration of chlamydial infections, for example in various serological and immunological methods, e.g. the counterimmunoelectrophoresis method, the passive haemagglutination methods, or the HIG, EIA, FIA and RIA methods. The preparation can also be used for the production of chlamydial group-specific antibodies using standard immunization techniques.
