ABSTRACT A two-compartment water splitter (10, 110) having alternating cation (11a, 11h, 11c and 11d) and bipolar membranes (12a, 12b, 12c and 12d) is used to remove alkali metal cations from an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution (17, 117) so as to produce an acidified salt solution. The coproduct is a base such as NaOH or KOH. The acidified salt solution (31) may then be fed to a membrane or diaphragm electrolytic cell (30a, 30b, 30c) for production of chlorine and alkali metal hydroxide. (Figure 2)
