ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a press for removing water from a fibre web which is continuously attached to a felt or wire fab- ric, the press comprising a pair of nip rolls defining a pressing zone through which the web attached to said fabric and another felt or wire fabric are passed in such manner that the web is interposed between both said fabrics in the said nip rolls, one of said nip rolls lying against the fabric carrying the web being in the form of a smooth press roll, and the other of said nip rolls having a recessed surface, a line joining the centres of the nip rolls being inclined with respect to the direction the web passes through the nip rolls so that the fabric and attached web cover a part of the periphery of the smooth roll downstream of the pressing zone, said covered part extending over at least 5° measuring from the centre of the roll.
