ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A valve has features for wedging its gates into sealing contact and for balancing pressure exerted on the stem. The valve has a body with a cavity. A stem connected to a handle extends through the body into the cavity. The stem moves a pair of gate segments between an open position and closed position. A pressure balancing shaft is carried in a passage that is opposite the stem. The shaft has an end stop that prevents further outward movement. Both the shaft and the stem have wedging devices that wedge the gate segments apart from each other when the stem is in its lower position. The stem has the same pressure area as the shaft to reduce torque requirements for opening and closing the valve.
