A relief valve has a valve body with a cavity therein, a guideway extending to the cavity, a valve seat in the cavity and a flow path through the cavity and across the valve seat to exhaust. An actuator is slidably positioned in the guideway, and a valve element is slidably positioned in the valve body within the cavity, facing the guideway and slidable into and biased toward seating engagement with the valve seat. A compression spring is located between the actuator and the valve element, the latter extending into the guideway from the cavity. The actuator and/or the valve element includes a spring seat to receive the compression spring and a stop to encounter the other of the actuator and the valve element with the compression spring compressed. There is a return spring between the valve body and the valve element to bias the valve element toward seating engagement with the valve seat.
