ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A support roll winding machine is disclosed which has rider rolls, resting upon the winding roll, which are vertically displaceable in lateral guides. The invention provides, apart from a first rider roll resting upon the winding roll, along the crest-line thereof, two additional rider rolls arranged axially parallel with and on each side of the first rider roll, in such a manner that the additional rider rolls come to rest upon the peri- phery of the winding roll only after a predetermined amount of material has been wound onto the winding roll. The three rider rolls are mounted on a crossbeam, with the first one mounted for movement relative to the crossbeam and the two others mounted on the crossbeam by rigid brackets.
