An apparatus drawing power from a process control current loop is provided. The apparatus has a sensor and a low pass filter electrically connected to the current loop. The sensor receives current from the low pass filter. In one embodiment the apparatus further includes a start up circuit electrically connected between the current loop and the low pass filter, the start up current limiting the current draw of the low pass filter. In addition, the sensor may be a Hall effect sensor that produces a signal proportional to the magnetic flux (not a voltage but a PWM signal). The signal could be current, voltage, pulse width signal, serial data stream or any other form.
