ABSTRACT Prior to the solvent extraction of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid the pretreatment of acid is necessary for an efficient and successful operation. The suspended solids in the acid solution is first removed effi- ciently with an inclined-corrugated-plate separator without addition of chemical reagents and then the organic matter in the solution is extracted with kerosene. A very clear acid solution is obtained. The concentrated sludge can be returned to the phosphoric acid plant and the crud organic matter form- ed as a third phase between the organic and the aqueous phases produced in the kerosene washing in the settler chambers is withdrawn and treated in a centrifugal separator to recover the Kerosene. The recycled kerosene can be used as a good diluent in the subsequent uranium solvent extraction process.
